Dynamics of Indian Party System in 16th Lok Sabha Elections 2014: The Mandate for the BJP
Dr. Lalit Kumar
Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, BUC College, Batala, Dist. Gurdaspur.
The 2014 general elections was regarded as the most important in Indian history since 1977. It saw the decimation of ruling Congress Party, spectacular victory for BJP and a new style of campaigning that broke every rule in the political game. The BJP became the first non-Congress Party to win clear majority on its own by getting 282 Lok Sabha seats in the Lower House with thirty one percent votes when the party’s catchment area of winnable seats was less than 350 seats. The paper is trying to find out that whether coalition politics is replaced by the majority party rule? Secondly, what kind of new developments took place in the Indian party system in 16th Lok Sabha election?
